Border Collie Rescue is here Because of Border Collies.

Originally founded in 1976, the organisation started as a loose group of volunteers who came together to cater for the rising number of homeless Border Collies resulting from the increasing popularity of the breed.

Now a registered charity, Border Collie Rescue remains true to its
founding concepts. Retaining its origins as a voluntary body with no
paid employees, it is run and staffed entirely by volunteers.

The charities work falls into two principal areas, defined by its objects.

Rescue, care, sanctuary, re-habilitation and re-homing of unwanted,
homeless or ill treated Border Collies and Working Sheepdogs, forms
a major part of its day to day workload.

If you have ever shared your life with a Border Collie, you will know they are a very special breed of dog.

Developed over many centuries, with origins in the Anglo/Scottish
Borders, the breed has become known as one of the most intelligent
of all dogs, with a reputation as the worlds best working sheepdog.

It is often a lack of understanding of these hereditary instincts which
create the problems that bring many into rescue care, so the charity
takes a unique approach to all aspects of its work, with the breeds
instincts, drives and origins foremost in mind.

Instead of kennels, Border Collie Rescue employs a network of foster
homes and runs specialised assessment and re-habilitation facilities
for dogs coming into its care. All dogs taken in are assessed around
sheep kept at the centre, with further assessments helping the charity place dogs into homes appropriate to their needs.

Each dogs is treated individually. Its psychological needs are
considered as well as its physical drive. Once these needs, and the
dogs character, are fully understood, it can be placed in a carefully
vetted home that fulfils its potential and can offer it the best life.

Border Collie Rescue also works towards a greater understanding of
the breed and the furtherance of good husbandry and welfare
practices. Education and information, freely available, is the key to the
prevention of many of the breeds problems. The charity offers such
advice in many ways, via its websites, its weekly advice line, social
networking, video production and work experience placements for
students and breed enthusiasts at its centre near York.

Each year, many Border Collies are taken into rescue centres with
behavioural problems that arise from a lack of understanding of their
mental welfare needs. This is a sensitive and intelligent breed and
requires sensitive and intelligent handling.

In 2011, 35 years after its birth, Border Collie Rescue is busier than ever.

Border Collie Rescue is very grateful to Ronnie Goodyer, Dawn Bauling and Indigo Dreams Publishing, for their kind offer to produce and publish a book "Because of Border Collies" in aid of our work on behalf of this wonderful and unique breed.

It is so relevant in so many respects.

The title sums up why we exist and why we do what we do.

The content of poetry, prose, anecdotes and stories will be a unique and varied offering in praise of the breed we so love and respect.

This will be a book filled with writings by people owned by Border Collies, each person with their own unique experience and perspective on the individuality of their dog. It will come from their heart, a place very much occupied by their dog.
It will entertain, amuse, and hopefully inform.

It will be a very special and unique book about a very special and unique breed.
We are delighted to be part of it.
